Dear Professional,
The Colorado Juvenile Council (CJC) originally
was formed in 1963 by a group of professionals from Juvenile Probation,
Juvenile Parole and the Department of Institutions. Over the years,
CJC has evolved to include members from virtually every discipline of juvenile
services throughout Colorado. Membership now includes representatives
from Law Enforcement, Social Services, Probation, Parole, Mental Health,
Courts (Judges and Attorneys), Education, Youth Corrections, Residential
Childcare, and Youth Alternative programs.
CJC’s goal is to bring professionals from
these entities together to network and share information to better serve
Colorado youth. In addition, CJC has a history of involvement in
youth and juvenile legislation that affects how we provide treatment to
the juvenile population. CJC develops and presents regional workshops each
year, designed to bring current issues and information to the professionals
dealing with youth on a daily basis. Recent workshop topics have focused
on bullying, teen suicide, raves and designer drugs, interpreting / utilizing
psychological evaluations, and youth violence.
Every year in early May, CJC presents a three-day
conference with a variety of informational workshops and networking functions,
which provide attendees with the opportunity to explore the latest in treatment
and programming modalities. Again, current issues provide the underlying
theme for the conference, and the individual workshops reflect the ongoing
challenges to youth and those working with them. The highlight of the annual
conference is the Awards Banquet, which honors four youth selected from
throughout the state and awarded with scholarships to acknowledge their
efforts and success.
Professional awards are also presented to
a youth worker, a youth program, program administrator, support staff,
and volunteer nominated by peers for outstanding service. An annual
Benefit Auction is also held at the conference to pay for the youth scholarships.
The auction mixes a great time with a great cause and is always a fun event.
CJC currently is accepting applications
for new memberships. The $25.00 annual fee entitles members to
discounted admissions at regional workshops and the annual conference.
Additionally, this CJC web site has been developed to provide additional
information about training, new programs, employment opportunities, legislation
and other youth related topics. For more information, or to apply
